Appraisal Examination

There are many reasons one requests an appraisal. The most common are:

  • Knowledge for selling decision

  • Divorce

  • Charitable donation

  • Estate settlement / equitable distribution among beneficiaries

  • Insurance scheduling

  • Loss from fire, theft, or natural disaster

  • Commercial needs

Certifying the value of an item or many items begins with a personal, hands-on examination in the residence or business where the items are located. In order to accurately appraise an item, it must be positively identified. To provide a certified appraisal, though, it is not necessary that the items be examined personally by an appraiser to provide an accurate and fair appraisal.

This can be accomplished by someone collecting the information that the appraisers require. This is the sole responsibility of the appraisal examiner – providing information so the appraiser can do their job remotely. *Note: Appraisals for all items except jewelry can be completed remotely.

The Appraisal Examiner’s Responsibilities -

The objective of the appraisal examination is to gather item information that allows the appraiser to identify each item properly. This information includes images, a description of critical features and markings, and when available, provenance.

Suburban House

Residential Contents

Homeowners or Tenants. In the event of a fire, theft, or natural disaster your insurance company will ask for a detailed itemized list of all belongings to be claimed. Most homeowners or renters can recall high-dollar items but are unable to recall most of the contents of the home. For instance, the purchase of an expensive stereo surround sound system may be easier to recall than the titles of an entire DVD collection that could number in the hundreds or thousands.

Business Inventory

What are the advantages of having a detailed business inventory? Tracking inventory helps to alleviate unnecessary purchases, knowing where or to whom a piece of office equipment is assigned, or what is being stored on or off-site, for example. Businesses are not exempt from fire, theft, or natural disasters that can be financially crippling. In the event a business is to be sold, merged, or purchased, a keen understanding of the true financial status helps in quicker processing of financial and legal matters.

Private Collections

Items such as art, firearms, media, sports memorabilia, stamps, antiques, or figurines should be documented in detail to ensure proper replacement. Our documentation processes include obtaining photos and basic information such as artist, serial numbers, media, location, dimensions, title, original cost, appraisal, and insurance. This information will prevent duplicate purchases, insurance policy limits on household items, and increased insurance coverage.

Estate Planning

Losing a loved one can be absolutely devastating. Executors are charged with the task of providing a detailed list of all the deceased's assets. Having a documented plan of who will receive what belongs during an emotional time will elevate some of the executor's responsibilities.

Divorce / Prenuptial

A detailed list of assets can assist in splitting up household items, knowing the value of belongings, getting the most equitable settlement, and speed up the separation process. A premarital inventory of assets that account for what each spouse has brought to the marriage.

Structural / Rental Property

Documenting the condition of a dwelling before, and after, a tenant moves in will provide important information on the condition of the dwelling as well as any items included. This can clear up any issues that may arise later for both the landlord and tenant.

Self-Storage Units

Off-site Storgage

Like any other structure, storage units are not exempt from fire, theft, or natural disaster. It is wise to check your homeowners or renters insurance policy to see if off-site storage is covered. Most off-site storage units are infrequently visited and it can be difficult to recollect every item that has been stored in even the smallest of units.

Moving House

Relocation / Moving

In general, most moving companies do not capture a detailed inventory of your items. This inventory is crucial should there be loss or damage occur. International moves require an itemized list of belongings that will be packed for  shipping.

Living Legacy
